Measured Cosmological Mass Density in the WHIM: the Solution to the ’Missing Baryons’ Problem
نویسندگان
چکیده
We review the current high-significance X-ray detections of Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM) filaments at z > 0 along the lines of sight to the two blazars Mrk 421 (z = 0.03) and 1ES 1028+511 (z = 0.361). For these WHIM filaments, we derive ionization corrections and, when possible, metallicity estimates. This allows us to obtain refined estimates of the number density of OVII WHIM systems down to the OVII column density sensitivity of our observations, and most importantly, a measurement of the cosmological mass density ΩWHIM b in the WHIM, at redshift z < 0.361. These estimates agree well with model predictions and with the total estimated amount of missing baryons in the local Universe, although errors are large, due to the still limited number of systems. We conclude discussing future observational strategies and mission designs for WHIM studies.

Searching for the Missing Baryons in the Warm-hot Intergalactic Medium
We discuss physical properties and the baryonic content of the Warm-hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM) at low redshifts. Cosmological simulations predict that the WHIM contains a large fraction of the baryons at z = 0 in the form of highly-ionized gas at temperatures between 105 and 107 K. Using high-resolution ultraviolet spectra obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) and t...
متن کاملSoft X-ray Excess of Clusters: a Thermal Filament Model, and the Strong Lensing of Background Galaxy Groups
The observational and theoretical status of the search for missing cosmological baryons is summarized, with a discussion of some indirect methods of detection. The thermal interpretation of the cluster soft X-ray and EUV excess phenomenon is examined in the context of emission filaments, which are the higher density part of the warm hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) residing at the outskirt of cl...
متن کاملSearching for the missing baryons in the Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium
At low redshift (z < 2), almost half of the baryons in the Universe are not found in bound structures like galaxies and clusters and therefore most likely reside in a Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM), as predicted by simulations. Attempts to detect WHIM filaments at cosmological distances in absorption towards bright background sources have yielded controversial results that I review here. ...
متن کاملDetectability of the Warm/Hot Intergalactic Medium Through Emission Lines of Ovii and Oviii
Most of cosmic baryons predicted by the big-bang nucleosynthesis has evaded the direct detection. Recent numerical simulations indicate that approximately 30 to 50 percent of the total baryons in the present universe is supposed to take a form of warm/hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) whose X-ray continuum emission is very weak. To identify those missing baryons, we consider in detail the detecta...

baryonic matter distribution in the large-scale structures is one of the main questions in cosmology. This distribution can provide valuable information regarding the processes of galaxy formation and evolution. On the other hand, the missing baryon problem is still under debate. One of the most important cosmological structures for studying the rate and the distribution of the baryons is gal...
